Screenwriter Kay Cannon on PITCH PERFECT 2

By:

Kay Cannon got the idea for Pitch Perfect while working as a writer on 30 Rock. She says however that everyone she pitched it to turned her down. That is until she talked to actress and producer Elizabeth Banks. CUT TO: Cannon is now gearing up for the sequel to the immensely popular girl musical that even men can’t stop talking about.

The first film looked the life of college freshman Beca – played by Anna Kendrick —  as she joins a floundering a cappella group that goes onto compete in the national competition. The team of misfits becomes best friends along the way and oh yeah, there’s also killer music and a riff-off. Pitch Perfect 2 promises to deliver just that and more. ScreenwritingU sat down with Cannon to hear all the details.

“All female groups are the underdogs,” says Cannon about the singers in these types of competitions. That’s the biggest point she gleaned from the book Pitch Perfect which follows different collegiate a cappella groups around the country. Cannon took that aspect and built her story around a universal theme of underdogs.

Cannon has also written for the TV shows New Girl and Cristela. Pitch Perfect 2 co-stars Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow and Elizabeth Banks. The film releases in theaters May 15.
